Our History

The CASA Movement-How It Began:

Established in 1977 by a juvenile court judge in Seattle, Washington, National CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) has become a cornerstone of the American legal system, supporting children in foster care nationwide. Originally founded to ensure the voices of vulnerable children are heard and their best interests upheld in court, National CASA has grown into a network encompassing nearly 950 state and local programs. These programs, along with dedicated volunteers, advocate tirelessly for abused and neglected children, providing crucial support to ensure their safety and well-being.

Through advocacy, training, and support, National CASA enhances the quality of advocacy efforts, striving for positive changes in policies and practices within the foster care system. This commitment has raised awareness of children’s needs and garnered greater support for CASA volunteers, who continue to make a profound impact on countless lives.

From its modest beginnings, National CASA remains steadfast in its mission to advocate for abused and neglected children, offering hope and stability through effective advocacy and unwavering dedication to their cause.
